Chicago
If Chicago was once "Hog Butcher to the World," and later "City of Broad Shoulders," when I think of the place I consider my hometown, I am in mind of Alex Kotlowitz’s stirring set of tales, "Never a City So Real.” Living in the suburbs of Washington, DC, I miss the thrill of a truly big city, the never-ending stream of cultural opportunities, the ability to discover new neighborhoods every month, the imposing sturdiness of buildings whose architects and builders had the temerity to believe that they could change the spirit and texture of one of the world’s greatest skylines. And while I love New York, and San Francisco, and Paris, and Lima, still Chicago seems like it is just a little bit “realer” than any other place I've yet been.
